I have always loved history and have always felt a deep connection to our nation’s history. I’m proud of the role of my own ancestors played in the American Revolution.
As the United States approaches the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding, documenting the Revolutionary War patriots buried in Iowa offers a meaningful way to connect local communities to the earliest chapters of our shared national story. Although the Revolutionary War was fought far from the Midwest, many veterans and patriots later made their homes on the prairies of Iowa, bringing with them the spirit of service, resilience, and civic commitment that shaped the United States. This project seeks to share and preserve the histories of these individuals—ensuring their names, experiences, and contributions are not lost to time.
Celebrating America 250 provides an ideal moment to highlight the lives of these patriots and to reflect on the enduring principles they helped to secure. Honoring them not only deepens our understanding of how the nation’s founding generation ultimately spread across the continent, but also invites Iowans to see themselves as part of a long continuum of civic responsibility. By illuminating the stories of these early Americans, this project encourages communities to preserve local history, foster pride in our national heritage, and inspire future generations to engage thoughtfully in American democracy.
I encourage you to explore the lives of these patriots. If you can, visit the cemeteries and gravesites. Please note that some cemeteries are pioneer cemeteries, meaning they are small and in some cases, on private property. Some cemeteries are easy to find and some are more difficult. The latitude and longitude coordinates for each cemetery have been provided. Also note, that only those soldiers with known burial locations are included in this list, but all are included on the American Revolution Soldiers Buried in Iowa website at www.americanrevolutionsoldiersburiediniowa.com.
We must honor these patriots, recognizing the role they individually and collectively played, not only in the American Revolution but in Iowa history. I hope that you enjoy exploring the lives of these patriots as much as I did.
