Enlisted around the age of 14 or 15 in Norwich, New London County, Connecticut on March 1, 1778 as a private soldier for a term of one year in the company commanded by Captain John McGregor in the Regiment of the Connecticut Line of Colonel John Durkey/Durkee. Discharged in the State of New York and returned to Norwich where he again enlisted for a term of three years in Captain McGregor's Company. The following fall he was transferred to the company commanded by Captain Warner where he served until discharged at Peekskill, New York.
