Enlisted as a volunteer January 17, 1781 in Bedford County, VA. Served in the Virginia Line under Captain Joseph Poindexter in Colonel Marryweathers/Merriweather's Regiment. Received his discharge on April 23, 1781 from Captain Poindexter. He then went back to Bedford County and reenlisted under Captain Hall and served under Sergeant Pritchett as a guard on the magazines for a period of six months and received a discharge from Sergeant Pritchett.
