John enlisted at age 17 while a resident of Montgomery County, VA and served as a private in the Virginia troops as follows from May 1, 1780, four months and twenty days in Captain Enoch Osborn's (his uncle) Company. Colonel Preston's Virginia Regiment from the spring of 1781, six months in Captain Enoch Osborn's Company, Colonel Preston's Regiment, subsequently six months in Captain Martin Gambrell's Company, Colonel William Campbell's Regiment; five weeks in Captain Ward's Company, Colonel Preston's Regiment at Whitten's Station in the State of Tennessee. He was discharged in September 1782. Pension S32423. He moved to Iowa in 1851.
