Charles enlisted in 1777 at Yorktown, Pennsylvania and served for three years and nine months as matross (soldier in an artillery unit who assisted the gunners in loading, firing, and moving cannons) in Captain Patrick Duffy's Company, Colonel Thomas Proctor's 4th Regiment of Continental Artillery of the Pennsylvania Line. During his service, he took part in the battles of Brandywine and Germantown. He also served on General Sullivan's Western Expedition. He was discharged in 1781 at Trenton, New Jersey.
