Drafted in 1779 and served as a private under Captain Jonathan Coburn, Major Lowther, and Colonel Joseph Crockett. Served until 1780. Next he served as an Indian spy under Ensign Benjamin Sills. In October 1780, he volunteered to serve as an India spy under Captain Coburn and served until October 1781. In March 1783, he was ordered out as an Indian spy and served as such until June or July 1783.
