Joseph served a number of different times, first enlisting at age 22. Entered as a substitute in the militia and served for two separate people, one month in May and one in June 1776. In July 1776, he entered service as a private in the militia and served five months, then another three months tour of duty in February 1777, all in South Carolina under Captains Gregg, Evans, and Laburk. In August 1777, he volunteered in the militia in North Carolina, having moved to that state, and served under Captain Cade for three months. In March 1778, he served under Captain Peter Robinson and was stationed near Wilmington, North Carolina for two months. His next tour of duty was under Captain William Moore and Colonel Brown, where he served as a horseman protecting the country against the Tories; he received a discharge after serving five months. At this time, Tories were plundering the citizens of the country, so at Captain Moore's request, George Perkins served again for three months in 1780. He reentered service in May 1780 and served under Captain Pearson and General Francis Marion for six weeks in South Carolina.
