Nathan Brown enlisted while a resident of Salem, Westchester County. On August 11, 1778, he volunteered in a company under the command of Captain Benjamin Stevens for three months and was discharged. He was drafted in April 1779 into a company commanded by Captain Chapman and later transferred to Captain Lawrence's Company. He served another month under Captain Keeler. Brown was part of the standing militia called the Minute Men and he often served under Captain Chapman during the summer of 1779. He served again in the summer of 1782. Nathan. Brown made application for a pension on November 10, 1832 and it was granted. Nathan came to Iowa in 1839.Â
