Entered the Connecticut militia in December 1775 and served three months. Then enlisted in February 1777 at age 17 at Stratford, Fairfield county, CT for a term fo three years in Captain Josiah Lacey's Company in Fifth Connecticut Regiment in the Continental Establishment, commanded by Colonel Philip B. Bradley. Served in that regiment until May 1779 at whcih time a regiment of light infantry was called for from the CT line to join General Wayne into which regiment Nathan was transferred. He remained in this regiment until 1780 when he was ordered to join his former company and regiment. He was taken prisoner at Bergen, New Jersy May 12, 1780 and "carried" to New York and kept in close confinement until the last of January 1781 when he was exchanged. He rejoined his former regiment and was honorably discharged June 23, 1781. In the same year, he again enlisted and served in Captain David Edgar's Company, in Colonel Sheldon's Regiment of Horse, where he served until his discharge at Danbury, CT at the close of the war in 1783. Muster rolls show he was present at Valley Forge in March, April, and May of 1778. See pension S39899.
