Enlisted as a private in the Continental Army on February 8, 1777 at Leesburg, Loudon County, Virginia. He served under Captain Windsor Brown in First Virginia State Regiment under the command of Major James Allison and Colonel George Gibson. The brigade was commanded by Peter Muhlenberg.
