At age 15, he joined a company of thirty-five men under the command of Captain William Conner on raids against the Tories.
At age 18, he enlisted with the 2nd Delaware Regiment, commanded by Colonel Henry Neill, serving as a drummer and fifer in Captain William Moore's Company. He was mustered out of service October 31, 1780.
