Joseph listed around age 16. He served in the 7th and 8th Virginia Regiments. The biography of a grandchild, which appears in the History of Lee County, Iowa, states that he fought in the Battle of Eutaw Springs, South Carolina. This battle was an American victory on September 8, 1781, which forced Cornwallis to focus attention on Yorktown.
