Francis entered service in June 1778 and served one year in 19th Virginia Regiment, Virginia Line, as a volunteer under General McIntosh, Colonel Evans, Captain Hardin, and Lieutenant Rodgers. In June 1779, he joined the army as a volunteer under the command of General Broadhead, Colonel Evans, Captain Hardin, and Lieutenant Rodgers. He took part in the Battle of Munceytown on the Allegheny River in August 1779 and marched from Pittsburgh up the Allegheny River to Munceytown, Pennsylvania, then back to Pittsburgh where he was stationed at Fort McIntosh, except when on scouting parties. In June 1779, he was appointed by General Broadhead as an Indian spy and he served eight months in that capacity. He was discharged in 1780.
